Presidential Search Update

April 23rd, 2012

This message is being sent on behalf of Board of Trustees Chair, Vicki Orrico.

Dear Colleagues,

The Board of Trustees met on Friday afternoon to discuss the presidential search.  After extensive deliberation and due diligence, the board  voted to continue the presidential search.  We agreed beforehand that a candidate would need broad support from the board to be chosen.  Unfortunately, while several candidates had strong support, no one candidate could garner broad enough support from the board.

As we had reported to you recently, it became clear to us in our deliberations that the growth of the campus, the needs of the institution and external pressures on Washington higher education are such that we need to more fully discuss the leadership structure, the role of the president, and the desired major accountabilities for the position.  We are considering whether the full scope of the position as described in the presidential profile is too much to ask of one person and we want to thoughtfully and openly  consider the position description before continuing the search.

A subcommittee of the board, consisting of Paul Chiles and me, the outgoing and incoming chairs, will be meeting over the course of the next several weeks to discuss the process for continuing.  We share the desire of the community to move ahead with finding a new president, but we want to make sure our decision is the best one possible for the college.  We appreciate your contributions to this process and your willingness to focus on our most important work of making our students successful.  We will be in touch soon with more details about the process as we proceed with our search and will continue to involve and benefit by the participation of the whole community.  We are grateful to the community for their help during this process.

The Board also extended the contract of Laura Saunders, interim president, until June 30, 2012.

Best regards,

Vicki Orrico
