Winter Quarter Course Term End Issue

At the end of Winter Quarter there was an issue with Canvas locking out some students prematurely from their courses.  The root of this problem was discovered as a programming problem with data (specifically course end dates) not updating in some courses.

To prevent this from happening again next quarter we will be checking dates periodically within Canvas.  As there are over 2500 courses in Canvas we will need your help so be on the look out for a reminder around Mid-Quarter to verify your course end dates.

If you have specific question regarding the Term End Issue, please feel free to contact me directly via email at jason.aqui@bellevuecollege.edu

CANVAS Feature Upgrades

Instructure (the makers of CANVAS) schedules monthly improvements and bug fixes to it’s product.  Feature Upgrades are requested by the Canvas community of which Bellevue College is a member, along with 300+ other institutions.

Feature Upgrades are usually released every 3 weeks, the process is also a community effort as Instructure will announce a release, open the changes up for review and testing, then after testing if everything works as it should will upgrade the product.

A release schedule will usually look like the following:

  • Beta Release & Notes(Day 1 of Release Cycle): A copy of the proposed changes will be available at https://bc.beta.instructure.com/ this is your opportunity to review changes and test them.  If it’s not to your liking or doesn’t work as it should, you can voice your opinion to delay or fix the change.
  • Production Release Notes:(Day 7 of Release Cycle) After a week of testing and feedback, Instructure will determine what changes are ready to move into Prodcution.
  • Production Release:(Day 12 of Release Cycle) On the Saturday after Production Release Notes the final Update will be pushed, usually in the late night, on the Sunday all changes will be in place.

Next Upgrade Scheduled for Saturday March 30, 2013

The next feature upgrade is scheduled for Saturday March 30, 2013.  You can review changes here and provide feedback until Monday March 25th.
