HD 199: Course Guidelines for Students

HD 199 credits are variable and may range from 1 – 5 credits. Arrangements for Individual Studies must be made with a full time counseling faculty member. Please follow the following steps when applying for Independent Study.

  1. Make an appointment with a counselor who has HD 199 space available. Consult the list below or obtain a list at the front desk at the Counseling Center which is located in the Student Services Building, second floor, to determine who is available and what subjects they are willing to supervise.
  2. Write an independent study proposal. Give some thought to the subject that you wish to pursue and be prepared to present an idea to the counselor with whom you meet.
  3. Complete the Independent Study Contract  and bring it with you to your appointment.
  4. Meet with your counselor to discuss the proposal and make an agreement about assignments and evaluations and set up additional appointments during the quarter.
  5. Maintain a time log of activities during the quarter to reflect the amount of time spent on the project. Each credit requires approximately 15 hours of work during the quarter. Submit the time log with the final project.

You can enroll in independent study credits according to the following timeline:

  • 4 to 5 credits: By the tenth day of the quarter
  • 3 credits: By the end of the fifth week.
  • 1 to 2 credits: By the end of the seventh week.
  • No enrollment after the seventh week of the quarter.

Note: Most Independent Studies will be between 1-5 credits, but most counselors accept no more than 2 credits.
