Electrical Engineer Standards Support Specialist

Position Description:
Seattle City Light, a department of the City of Seattle, is one of the nation’s largest municipally owned utilities in terms of the number of customers served. Over the years we have worked very hard to keep Seattle’s electricity affordable, reliable, and environmentally sound. Today, City Light is a recognized national leader in energy efficiency and environmental stewardship.

The incumbent will support electrical engineering activities related to the development and training related to new and existing material and construction standards and compatible units. Material standards document the requirements for the material and equipment we purchase and install. Construction Standards identify how material and equipment are placed and interconnected to result in a safe, reliable, and cost-effective power system. Compatible units (also known as assemblies) are groupings of construction materials that are logically organized to facilitate standardized construction of structures and devices, cost estimates, and labor resource estimates.

The incumbent’s primary focus will be on creating new and updating existing compatible units derived from approved construction standards with current information related to material choices, equipment, crew size, labor hours, and cost and entering this information in Seattle City Light’s Work and Asset Management System (WAMS) database.

Seattle City Light’s standards are important because they define the utility’s best practices. Compliance with these standards is mandatory for all City Light employees, contractors, and suppliers. This position reports to the Standards Supervisor.

Job Responsibilities:

In a supportive and encouraging environment, under the technical direction of an Electric Power Systems Engineer (EPSE), this individual will:

Develop, review, and assist with the creation and implementation of compatible units used by Seattle City Light and other qualified personnel to design and build our above and below ground, electric distribution system.
Perform basic research, including field observations and audits to document adherence to standards and compatible units or deviations there from. Meet with operations personnel to learn about preferred materials and methods and compile task-time data. Monitor accuracy of compatible unit data and update as necessary with the most current information.
-Analyze, organize, and report field audit findings to staff. Meet with staff from other divisions to collect data and information.
-Enter new and update existing compatible unit data in WAMS to enable their use by engineering staff for preparing work orders and customer service representatives responding to service requests.
-Participate in and support monthly Looped Radial, Network, and Streetlight Standards Committee meetings. Act as chair or clerk of monthly Compatible Unit User’s Group meetings.
-Perform other related duties of comparable level/type as assigned.
